Shotguns For Home Security: Keep Yourself And Your Family Safe

Recreation & Sports Blog

A shotgun is one of the most reliable means of home defense you can find. Nothing will stop an intruder like the sound of a shotgun shell being loaded into the chamber. If you're considering buying a shotgun for home protection, there are a few things that you'll need to consider.

Safe Storage

Do you have a place in your home where you can store the shotgun safely? This is especially important if you have any kids that live in the house or visit from time to time. For home protection, the shotgun has to be accessible to you but not to the other little humans that share your home.

So before you buy a shotgun, make sure you have a secure location to keep the shotgun. If you don't, you will need to invest in a safe, trigger lock, and locking ammo box.

When securing the shotgun, make sure that you store the ammo separately from the shotgun itself. If a kid, or someone who shouldn't be using the gun, finds the gun, you don't want them to easily find the shells that go with it.

Moisture Control

Rust is one serious issue that can cause problems with your shotgun. Because of this, it's imperative that the location that you store the shotgun is completely dry. It only takes a small amount of moisture to start corrosion, and once it starts, it can be very hard to undo and stop.

If you live in a damp environment, you'll want to invest in a safe and a dehumidifying system for the safe. Store all of the straps, ammo, and accessories separately so that the moisture that's trapped in those items doesn't release into the safe and coat the shotgun with moisture.

Insurance

Your homeowners insurance will cover the loss of firearms up to a set amount. If you are unsure of your homeowners or renters insurance protection for your firearms, contact your agent. You may need to have the gun appraised and add a rider to the policy to ensure that it is covered for the amount that it is actually worth. This is most important in high-value and antique or collectible firearms as they are usually valued at a higher amount than the policy will cover without a rider.

Safety — it's all about safety. If you take the necessary precautions, you will have the shotgun for home security and won't have to worry about it being a safety concern for those who share your home with you.

Zip It Up: Zip Line Jumping 101

The very first time I put on the harness for a zip line excursion, it was a life-changing moment. As I took the leap of faith and watched the world pass beneath me, I was awestruck. I knew right away that it wouldn't be the last time. I have spent my free time since then studying different zip line methods and locations to see what other experiences I might be able to enjoy. I created this site to show other zip line enthusiasts, and those curious but not yet experienced, to learn what I have about the options out there. I hope that the information here encourages you to get out there and give it a shot.
