4 Tips For The Beginning Duck Hunter

Recreation & Sports Blog

Duck is a delicious meat with a rich and fatty flavor. It's excellent when roasted and the leftovers can be used to make decadent sandwiches. Unfortunately, duck can be quite expensive when purchased in grocery stores. If you enjoy hunting and you'd like to try a new challenge, you can try your hand at duck hunting. Duck hunting is a fun sport and an excellent way to harvest your own meat. Here are four tips for the beginning duck hunter.

1. Wear the right gear.

Whenever you go out hunting, it's important that you choose the right gear for safety and comfort. Wear waterproof clothes since you'll be spending the day around wetlands. Good waterproof boots and thick socks will keep your feet dry and comfortable in any terrain. If you're hunting with others, make sure you wear clothes that are clearly visible. This can prevent accidents and keep everyone in your hunting party safe.

2. Bring your trained dog.

A dog is invaluable for any small game hunter. When you hunt ducks, you may need to shoot them from a great distance. A dog who is trained to assist you in the hunting process will be able to fetch the duck that you caught. Make sure your dog is well-trained. Unruly dogs can scare away the ducks or ruin the meat after you make your kill. If you don't hunt frequently, you should do training drills to keep your dog in good form.

3. Invest in a waterfowl call.

A waterfowl call is a great tool for hunters. It mimics the sounds that ducks and other waterfowl make, and it looks just like a whistle. A waterfowl call can be useful for drawing your quarry out into the open so you can get a good shot. Duck calls sound different depending on their size, material, and design. Some sound higher and some sound lower in pitch. You may need to try a few different varieties before you find a type that works best for you. Different breeds of waterfowl will respond to different sounds.

4. Bring the right supplies.

After you bag a duck, you'll need to prepare the meat for transport. You'll want some gloves, a knife, and somewhere to store the meat after you've finished preparing it. Most hunters use a large cooler filled with ice packs or ice. You should bring zip-top plastic bags to use to seal your meat; this will keep it clean and uncontaminated.

Zip It Up: Zip Line Jumping 101

The very first time I put on the harness for a zip line excursion, it was a life-changing moment. As I took the leap of faith and watched the world pass beneath me, I was awestruck. I knew right away that it wouldn't be the last time. I have spent my free time since then studying different zip line methods and locations to see what other experiences I might be able to enjoy. I created this site to show other zip line enthusiasts, and those curious but not yet experienced, to learn what I have about the options out there. I hope that the information here encourages you to get out there and give it a shot.
