Ensuring Your Child’s First Trip to the Gun Store a Success

Recreation & Sports Blog

If you enjoy hunting, it is always exciting when your child shows an interest in the hobby you love so much. However, with that excitement comes a lot of responsibility, as you teach your child about safety and how to be a responsible hunter. Taking your child on their first trip to the local gun store should be a fun and exciting learning experience and is the perfect time to discuss gun safety while you help them pick out their first hunting rifle.

1. Hunting rifles for beginners

Getting your child a gun that is the right fit is vital and is also important for safety. A gun should be easy for your child to hold, cock, open, and shoot. Let your child try on several guns at the gun shop to see which one is a good fit and feels comfortable in their hands.

It is best to start with a less expensive model to see if your child maintains an interest in hunting as they get older. You can also purchase hunting rifles with adjustable stocks. These stocks make it easy for the rifle to grow with your child by allowing you to add spacers to the shotgun as necessary.

Look for safety features, such as a key lock. This feature allows the gun to be fully locked and unusable when you are not hunting. This feature will give you peace of mind knowing the gun is secure and will prevent unwanted use of the gun.

2. Supplies and accessories

Having the right gear will not only protect your child from the elements but will keep them safe. Help your child pick out a hunting hat, vest, and pants suitable for the climate they will be hunting in. A backpack makes a nice accessory piece to carry ammunition, as well as a few snacks and bottled water when on hunting trips.

A good knife is important for any game prepping that is necessary when in the field. A mid-sized knife is best for children and foldable knives are good for safety. Avoid large knives and small knives, as they can be difficult for a child to maneuver and may result in injuries.

Helping your child navigate their first trip around the gun store is a great bonding experience. Not only will they find all the essentials they need for their first time in the field, but it is the perfect time to discuss the importance of gun safety and responsible hunting.

Zip It Up: Zip Line Jumping 101

The very first time I put on the harness for a zip line excursion, it was a life-changing moment. As I took the leap of faith and watched the world pass beneath me, I was awestruck. I knew right away that it wouldn't be the last time. I have spent my free time since then studying different zip line methods and locations to see what other experiences I might be able to enjoy. I created this site to show other zip line enthusiasts, and those curious but not yet experienced, to learn what I have about the options out there. I hope that the information here encourages you to get out there and give it a shot.
